A roof can look sound from the street while moisture is quietly collecting in the attic. That is why roof ventilation for older homes deserves more attention than a quick look at the shingles. Many New Jersey homes were built before modern attic ventilation standards became common, and years of roof repairs, added insulation, or exterior updates may have changed how the attic breathes.
The goal is not to make an attic feel like outdoor air. The goal is to manage heat and moisture so the roof structure, insulation, and living space stay protected. That can bring more warm household air into the attic and worsen moisture problems.
Do Not Mix Vent Types Without a Plan
One of the most common mistakes is installing new vents on top of an older system without considering how those vents interact. A ridge vent paired with gable vents, for example, can short-circuit airflow. Instead of drawing air from the soffits through the full attic, air may enter a nearby gable vent and exit the ridge before reaching the lower roof areas.
